BrizMUN Special Application Committees

With registration for BrizMUN Special Committees closing next week (Thursday the 28th of February to be precise) we at UNSA thought it was high time we told you a little bit about them.

This year’s BrizMUN has 4 Special Committees:

  1. Security Council
  2. International Court of Justice
  3. International Press Gallery
  4. Non-Governmental Organisations and Ambassadors Program

Under the Charter of the United Nations, the Security Council is responsible for maintaining international peace and security. At BrizMUN, the Security Council is tasked with resolving ongoing border disputes between Sudan and South Sudan. If you watch the news, you know, ever, you would have seen that in early 2011 people from the South of the country voted almost unanimously for independence. Excellent you say? Well, not everything has been hunky-dory since then and areas along the border remain disputed territory. What can the international community do to ensure stability between the two regions? Who knows.

Moving along to the International Court of Justice. This year Judges will be asked to issue an Advisory Opinion on a yet-to-be-determined legal issue (hopefully some rogue nation will be violating international law). No really, it’s not as arbitrary as that, it’s just that the Court will be asked to respond to conference activities. That’s all. Think of it as being a short prep debate with global ramifications.

The International Press Gallery will again be made up of both the well established and slightly wacky press agencies. Delegates will be following up leads, breaking news and filing from the perspective of their agencies in print, online and broadcast mediums.

Finally, the NGO’s will be acting as observers and advisers to the other committees. Amnesty International might deliver a presentation to the Human Rights Council on how best to reform the Universal Declaration of Human Rights before popping in to the High Commission for Refugees to shame Australia on its refugee policy. Ambassadors represent regional blocs, hosting regular meetings with all their members to ensure that action taken in committees is uniform and consistent and in line with regional policy.

All delegates on these committees will be playing a fairly big role in the direction of the conference, so get applying! For those of you with less MUN experience, general committee registration opens on the 25th of February, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Yours in MUN,

QUT UNSA.

QUT delegation to AMUNC

It’s MUN season again and this year the Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference is being held in sunny Wellington from July 7th-14th. The conference brings together 600 delegates from throughout the Asia-Pacific region for a week of debate by day, debauchery by night (well, not quite debauchery, but there are some excellent social events).

QUT will again be sending a delegation, so all those wanting to apply for a spot should fill in the online form below. There are limited places so bring your A-game. Be sure to include any previous MUN, debating, mooting or public speaking experience.

Applications are due by 5pm, 22 February. Sorry for the short notice – we only got our website up and running a couple of days ago (though the link has been on the facebook group for a while now, check us out).

Welcome to QUT UNSA

Hello and happy start-of-semester! Welcome to QUT UNSA’s shiny new website. Have a poke around and see what you think. There are going to be some changes to the club this year, though the first thing we’d like to do is make the whole thing modern and fun. Hence the website.

Hopefully by know you’ve at last had a cursory glance at the tabs on the side – navigate your way through all our scheduled events for 2013, some external conferences we think you might be interested in, a little bit of info about the new team running the show and of course a blog. What website is complete without a blog where a small but persistent group can indulge their narcissistic tendencies writing a whole lot of rubbish they actually think people want to hear! Starting with me of course.

I am the President, though I will answer to el Presidente, All Knowing Leader or “you there, with the glasses!” Now, if 5 years of high school taught me nothing, it taught me that I’m never going to make something “cool”. “Interesting” I can take a stab at though and that’s the plan.

We’ll be kicking off the year in style with a Mini-MUN (open for all to attend, though please register on the website before hand) prior to sending our sure to be victorious delegation to WorldMUN in Melbourne. They get back right in time for BrizMUN, not only a cracker conference, but a must-attend for all those wanting a spot on the QUT delegation to AMUNC.

(SIDEBAR: If all these acronyms are making your head hurt, click on the conferences tab on the side and that should clear things up).

Well that might be all from me for now. Keep an eye out for more news/updates from us. Until next time, au revoir!
